Overview

Meridian Labs processes thousands of lab orders daily, yet physicians tracked them through fax-era screens. Critical results hid in cluttered tables, and every inquiry meant a phone call.

I redesigned the client portal end to end: dashboard, test directory, order tracking, result inquiry and critical-result alerts — designed with lab staff, for clinical staff.

The challenge

In healthcare, a misread row is a patient-safety issue. The interface had to make status unmistakable at 6am on a ward computer, while compressing enormous tables into scannable views.

Strict compliance rules shaped every decision: audit trails, role-based views, and zero ambiguity in critical-result flagging.

Process

  1. 1
    Research

Site visits to two labs and interviews with 9 physicians; mapped the five questions asked before every shift.

  2. 2
    Table redesign

Status-first rows with color-plus-label encoding that survives color-blindness and bad monitors.

  3. 3
    Critical-result flow

An unmissable alert path from flag to acknowledgment, prototyped with on-call doctors.

  4. 4
    Handoff & rollout

A component library and phased rollout plan so the lab could migrate without downtime.
